KSU COVID-19 Guidelines for Day & Overnight Camps

COVID-19 Camps Page Header.jpgKennesaw State University’s Camps & Conferences team is excited to host camps for 2021. Our key objective for all camps is to maintain operations in a safe and healthy way. We appreciate your commitment and your patience as we navigate this together. Each camp is required to have a COVID-19 plan in place, and each camp should be able to provide that plan to the KSU Camps & Conferences team upon request. The plan should address, at a minimum, compliance with all KSU COVID-19 policies and procedures, including the below factors:

  • Camps should implement protocols for face coverings while at KSU in accordance with KSU policies and local and state ordinances.

  • To avoid close contact and minimize exposure, social distancing protocols should be in place in accordance with KSU policies and local and state ordinances.

  • Signs should be posted in highly visible locations (e.g., camp entrances, dining areas, restrooms) that promote everyday protective measures such as proper hygiene and social distancing requirements. Staff and campers must be trained on proper hand washing techniques, proper mask wearing and the importance of social distancing as part of required safety protocols.

  • Groups / Cohorts: workers and campers must be kept in the same groups for the duration of the camp and mixing of camper groups shall be limited to those instances where mixing is unavoidable. Consideration of local geographic area (e.g., community, city, town, or county) should be made when planning cohorts to reduce risk or spread of COVID-19.

  • Avoid sharing items between different cohorts/groups.

  • Camper & Worker personal items should remain in their designated room/area and should be labeled for each person.

  • Implement staggered scheduling for camp activities, dining, drop-offs and pick-ups. • Limit non-essential visitors and volunteers.

  • Have a designated COVID-19 point of contact. The point of contact should be responsible for responding to COVID-19 concerns and leading the response to any camper or staff member who becomes symptomatic or has potentially been exposed to COVID-19. All camp staff should know who this person is and how to contact them. Families should be advised about the COVID-19 point of contact as part of camp registration.

  • Routine cleaning of all high-touch, non-porous surfaces should be conducted at least once daily.

  • Implement a plan to recognize signs & symptoms of COVID-19 and respond to and isolate symptomatic campers or staff.  Staff, campers, and their families should be instructed to stay home if sick or having symptoms of COVID-19. A camper or staff who exhibits symptoms while in camp, should be isolated away from other campers or staff.

  • A communication plan for contacting the emergency contact of symptomatic or exposed campers or staff so that they can be picked up from camp. The emergency contact should be individual (parent, guardian, relative or friend) identified in the registration information.

Procedural Guidelines for Managing Suspected or Confirmed Case(s)

Disinfection Protocols:

In some circumstances, surface disinfection will be needed in addition to regular cleaning.  High-touch, non-porous surfaces should be disinfected under the following circumstances:

  • In areas where there are known or suspected cases of COVID-19.
  • In areas where someone has exhibited the symptoms of COVID-like symptoms

These areas should be vacated and not reoccupied until the surfaces have been properly disinfected.  In these instances, contact KSU’s COVID Response Team to initiate the COVID-19 disinfection protocols with the appropriate KSU entity:

Suspected Case(s)/Illness:

If a camper exhibits symptoms, they should be isolated away from other campers in an area predetermined for this purpose until a parent or guardian can pick up the camper. The isolation area must be within view at all times so that the minor is not unsupervised. Consideration for meals and care should be made for overnight campers should isolation be extended until a parent or guardian can arrive. Any members of the ill camper’s household should be identified and also isolated away from other campers until picked up by a parent or guardian. The household member should not be quarantined in the same area as the ill camper. This area must be supervised at all times. For purposes of overnight camps, a roommate is defined as a ‘household’ member during camp.

Confirmed Case(s):

If there is a COVID-19 confirmed case of a camper or camp staff reported, the Camp’s Designated Point of Contact for COVID is required to contact KSU’s COVID Response Team:
Email: COVIDresponse@kennesaw.edu
Phone: 470-578-5616

Any KSU Staff, Faculty or Student working with a camp may also self-report a positive case directly with the COVID Response Team:
coronavirus.kennesaw.edu

A camper or camp worker who is a confirmed case should isolate for the time period recommended by the Department of Public Health and should not return to camp until this period is completed.  Any close contact or household member of the confirmed case who is also attending camp should quarantine as directed and not participate in camp during this time.

Camp information (names of those in a cohort, household, housing assignments, and camp workers) should be maintained throughout each camp’s duration and available upon request should the Department of Public Health need information related to contact tracing.
